The Union Cabinet has approved a five-year extension of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, ensuring that income support for eligible farmers will continue through the 2030-31 financial year. The decision comes with a financial commitment of Rs 3,15,614 crore, reaffirming the Centre’s focus on strengthening financial assistance for the farming community.
Introduced in 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme has become one of the government’s flagship initiatives for providing direct income support to farmers. The latest Cabinet approval ensures that eligible beneficiaries will continue receiving annual financial assistance under the programme for another five years.
The decision was announced after the Union Cabinet meeting on Friday. Addressing the media, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the government’s approval for the extension.

The approval guarantees uninterrupted implementation of the scheme during the extension period, allowing eligible farmer families across the country to continue receiving financial support directly into their bank accounts.
What Is The PM-KISAN Scheme?
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) was launched on February 24, 2019, as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme designed to provide assured income support to farmers across India.
Under the programme, every eligible farmer family is entitled to Rs 6,000 annually. The assistance is distributed in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 each during the year.
Payments are made through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, with funds credited directly into Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts. This mechanism is intended to ensure timely transfers while reducing delays and leakages in the disbursement process.
Continued Income Support For Farmers
With the latest Cabinet decision, the PM-KISAN scheme will remain operational until the end of the 2030-31 fiscal, extending the government’s income support programme for millions of eligible farming households.
The continuation of the scheme is expected to provide financial assistance through direct cash transfers while maintaining the existing benefit structure. Eligible beneficiaries will continue to receive the annual support amount of Rs 6,000, subject to the scheme’s prevailing eligibility conditions.
The approval of the Rs 3,15,614 crore outlay underscores the government’s continued allocation of resources toward direct income support for farmers through one of its largest welfare programmes.
