Kerala is likely to announce a 2 per cent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees ahead of the Onam festival, a move that could provide a timely financial boost before the festive season. According to a report by Mathrubhumi, the proposed revision may be credited along with salaries for August 2026. If approved, the increase is expected to add nearly Rs 60 crore to the state’s expenditure.
This year’s Onam celebrations are scheduled for the last week of August, making the timing of the proposed revision significant for lakhs of government employees.
The report said the proposed increase is intended to ease the financial burden on employees and enhance their earnings before Kerala’s biggest festival. Available information indicates that the revised DA could be reflected in August salary payments.
While the government has not yet issued an official notification, the expected announcement is being viewed as a possible Onam “gift” for state government employees.
Recent DA Revisions By Centre, Banks And Railways
The proposed move follows a series of Dearness Allowance revisions announced by different government bodies this year.
In April, the Ministry of Finance approved a 2 per cent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for central government employees and pensioners, effective from January 1, 2026. The revision raised DA from 58 per cent to 60 per cent of Basic Pay. DA is revised twice every year based on movements in the All-India Consumer Price Index (AICPI), with announcements generally made in March and October and implemented from January and July.
Subsequently, in May, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) revised DA and DR for workmen and officer employees across various grades for the months of May, June and July 2026. The revision increased basic salaries in the range of Rs 48,000 to Rs 1,17,000, while DA was enhanced from Rs 435 to Rs 1,050.
The Indian Railways also announced a 2 per cent hike in DA and DR under the 7th Pay Commission framework. According to the Railway Board, the revision benefits lakhs of serving employees, pensioners, family pensioners and other eligible recipients.
Why Dearness Allowance Matters
Dearness Allowance is an important component of government salaries and pensions. It is designed to offset the impact of inflation and rising living costs for central and state government employees, public sector workers, defence personnel, bank employees and pensioners.
Periodic DA revisions have a direct impact on the income of nearly 50 lakh central government employees and around 65 lakh pensioners, including retired defence personnel and railway employees.
Several states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, have already announced DA increases. Meanwhile, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are among the states evaluating similar measures.
