‘Built By Machines, Directed By People’: GitLab Layoffs Signal End Of Traditional Coding

GitLab Layoffs: GitLab, widely seen as one of GitHub’s strongest competitors in the developer tools market, has announced a major restructuring initiative that will include layoffs, operational changes and a deeper push into artificial intelligence-driven software development. The software company revealed the move as part of a broader strategy shift aimed at preparing for what CEO Bill Staples described as the “agentic era” of engineering.
According to a TOI reports, the restructuring process is expected to wrap up by June 1.
In a detailed note addressed to employees, investors and customers, Staples said the company would handle the transition “openly,” including offering a voluntary separation programme for affected staff.
As part of the overhaul, GitLab is simplifying its organisational structure and reshaping internal operations. The company plans to remove as many as three layers of management in some departments to bring leadership closer to execution teams.
GitLab is also reorganising its research and development division into nearly 60 smaller teams with end-to-end ownership of projects. The move is intended to increase speed, accountability and product delivery efficiency, as per the report.
Another key part of the strategy involves embedding AI agents directly into workflows. GitLab said these AI systems will automate approvals, reviews and internal handoffs to improve operational speed. In addition, the company intends to scale back its international footprint by reducing up to 30 per cent of countries where it currently maintains smaller teams.
CEO Bill Staples Outlines AI-Focused Vision

Staples stressed that GitLab is positioning itself for a future where machines will increasingly build software under human supervision. “Software will be built by machines, directed by people,” Staples wrote in the memo.
He further argued that advances in AI are rapidly reducing the cost of software development, leading to growing demand across industries. “The supply of deep technical problems is multiplying, and the engineers who can solve them will be among the scarcest and most valuable talent in the market,” Staples wrote.
GitLab believes the next generation of software engineering will rely heavily on AI agents capable of planning, coding, reviewing and deploying applications with minimal human intervention.
Five Major Technology Bets Driving GitLab’s Future

The company also detailed five major technology priorities designed to support machine-scale software workloads. These include building infrastructure capable of handling high-volume AI agent activity, improving orchestration systems for automated development lifecycles and investing in context-rich data models to make AI tools more efficient.
GitLab is additionally focusing on governance and security features to ensure enterprises maintain control over AI-assisted development environments. The company also plans to support hybrid workflows combining human-led, AI-assisted and fully autonomous software operations.
Staples assured customers that existing contracts, support systems and product roadmaps would remain unaffected during the restructuring phase. He added that the company expects the transformation to accelerate innovation and strengthen GitLab’s position in the rapidly evolving AI software market.
According to the report, the company is expected to share the full financial impact and scope of the restructuring during its June 2 earnings call.
