Accenture CEO Julie Sweet Reveals Life-Changing Advice From Her Father That Shaped Her Success

Julie Sweet, CEO of Accenture, has shared a powerful lesson from her father that continues to influence her leadership style and career decades later. Speaking during a conversation with Albert Bourla on CNN, Sweet recalled how a disappointing experience as a teenager taught her the importance of excellence, preparation, and self-belief.
Sweet recounted participating in a speech competition while trying to earn money for college. After losing to the daughter of a prominent community leader, she complained to her father during the drive home. His response left a lasting impact. Sweet said her father told her that she would never benefit from influential family connections, but that she could achieve anything if she worked hard enough to become the undeniable choice. He bluntly pointed out that on that particular day, she simply had not been the best.
The Accenture chief described the conversation as one of the greatest gifts she ever received. Her father, who left high school early, served in the military, and later worked painting cars, regularly drove her to speech contests organized by civic groups. According to Sweet, his advice taught her to embrace who she was while believing that no goal was beyond her reach.
Reflecting on the lesson, Sweet said success requires more than ambition alone. Dreams must be matched with effort, discipline, and consistent action. She noted that this mindset has guided many of her personal and professional decisions throughout her life.
During the discussion, Bourla connected Sweet’s story to his own philosophy on achievement. He remarked that the biggest risk for ambitious people is not aiming too high and falling short, but aiming too low and succeeding, which can create a false sense of accomplishment and limit future growth.
The conversation also included a lighthearted exchange about switching jobs for a day. Sweet joked that taking over as CEO of Pfizer for a single day would be harmless because she would not have enough time to cause any damage. Instead, she said she would spend the opportunity learning more about the company’s scientific research and innovation efforts.
Bourla, meanwhile, said that leading Accenture would remind him of the enthusiasm and excitement he felt at the beginning of his career, while acknowledging the immense responsibility that comes with the role.
